Synonyms

[Nārada now describes Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s state of samādhi in the next two verses.185]; saṁyojya — after merging [ekī-kṛtya]; ātmānam — his mind and individuated “I”-sense [(mano’haṅkārāspadam); meaning the subtle body (sūkṣma-deham)186]; vijñānātmani — into his intellective faculty [(buddhi); or into the cosmic intellective principle (mahat-tattva)187]; [separating them from his gross body (sthūla-dehād viyojya)]; pravilāpya — [and] dissolving; tam — that [enlightened intellect (vijñānātmānam)]; kṣetra-jñe — in the witness self [(draṣṭari); the pure jīva in its essential nature (śuddha-jīva-svarūpe)188]; [separating it from the object field (dṛśyāṁśād viyojya); or from the subtle body (sūkṣma-dehāt)]; [he has merged (saṁyojya) the witness self (taṁ ca kṣetra-jñam)]; brahmaṇi — into the Absolute; ādhāre — the substratum of all being [āśraya-sañjñe]; [separating it from the witnessing function (draṣṭāṁśād viyojya)]; iva — just as; ghaṭa-ambaram — the space contained within a pot; [merges (pravilāpyate)]; ambare — in unlimited space [mahākāśe]; [when divested of its limiting adjunct in the form of the pot (ghaṭopādher viyojya)].

Translation

After merging his mind and individuated “I”-sense into his intellective faculty and dissolving that enlightened intellect in the witness self, he has merged the pure jīva into Brahman, the substratum of all being, just as the space contained within a pot merges in unlimited space [when divested of its limiting adjunct in the form of the pot].
