अब्भक्ष उपशान्तात्मा स आस्ते विगतैषणः ॥ ५२ ॥
ab-bhakṣa upaśāntātmā sa āste vigataiṣaṇaḥ
Synonyms
[Nārada now describes the practice of aṣṭāṅga-yoga undertaken by Dhṛtarāṣṭra in that holy place, in four verses beginning with the following (tatra tena kṛtam aṣṭāṅga-yogam āha snātveti caturbhiḥ).172]; snātvā — bathing; anusavanam — thrice a day [tri-sandhyam173]; hutvā — offering oblations [agni-hotraṁ kṛtvā174]; agnīn — into the sacred fire; yathā-vidhi — according to scriptural regulations; ca — and; ab-bhakṣaḥ — subsisting on water alone [ap eva bhakṣayati]; saḥ — he [Dhṛtarāṣṭra175]; āste — is residing [āsiṣyate]; tasmin — in that [hermitage (āśrame)176]; upaśānta — [with] a peaceful [(śāntaḥ), untainted by attachment or other vitiated emotions (rāgādy akaluṣitaḥ)]; ātmā — mind [(manaḥ); the psyche as a whole (antaḥkaraṇam)177]; vigata-eṣaṇaḥ — [and] devoid of cravings [for wealth, children, and community (vigatā dhana-suta-loka-viṣayaiṣaṇā yasmāt saḥ)178].
Translation
Bathing three times a day, offering oblations into the sacred fire according to scriptural regulations, and subsisting on water alone, he is residing in that hermitage with a peaceful mind and devoid of cravings.
