अहस्तानि सहस्तानामपदानि चतुष्पदाम् ।
फल्गूनि तत्र महतां जीवो जीवस्य जीवनम् ॥ ४६ ॥
ahastāni sahastānām apadāni catuṣ-padām
phalgūni tatra mahatāṁ jīvo jīvasya jīvanam

Synonyms

[In the next statement, Nārada reasons that Yudhiṣṭhira should not feel pained even in the worst case scenario of his aunt and uncles being eaten by a tiger (vyāghrādibhir bhakṣite ca tasmin duḥkhaṁ na kartavyam ity āha).151]; ahastāni — those without hands [the animals (paśvādīni)152]; [are sustenance (jīvanam), meaning, “food” (bhakṣya-paraḥ)153]; sa-hastānām — of [i.e., for] those who possess hands [human beings (manuṣyādīnām)154]; apadāni — those without feet [grass and vegetation (tṛṇādīni)]; [are food (jīvanam)]; catuḥ-padām — for four-legged animals; tatra — among all such classes of beings [teṣv ahastādiṣv api]; phalgūni — the weak [alpāni]; [are the sustenance (jīvanam)]; mahatām — of the strong; [the general principle governing all consumers of food (annāttṛ-bhāve sāmānya-prakāraḥ)155]; jīvaḥ — [is that] one living being; jīvanam156 — [is] food [jīvikā]; jīvasya — for another living being.

Translation

Those without hands are food for those who possess hands. Those without feet are food for four-legged animals. Among all such classes of beings, the weak are the sustenance of the strong. [The general principle governing all consumers of food is that] one living being is food for another.
