अरक्षतां व्यसनतः पितृव्यौ क्व गतावितः ॥ ३३ ॥
arakṣatāṁ vyasanataḥ pitṛvyau kva gatāv itaḥ
Synonyms
uparate — [after] the demise [the ascension to heaven (svargaṁ gate sati)106]; pitari — of our father; pāṇḍau — Pāṇḍu; pitṛvyau — our two uncles [Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Vidura, the brothers of our father (pitur bhrātarau dhṛtarāṣṭra-vidurau);107 or Gāndhārī and Dhṛtarāṣṭra (gāndhārī-dhṛtarāṣṭrau)108]; arakṣatām — protected; sarvān — all; naḥ — of us [asmān109]; śiśūn — [who were but] young children; suhṛdaḥ — [and moreover their own] relatives [whom they considered as their own sons (putrān)]; vyasanataḥ — from various calamities [nānā-vidhāpadbhyaḥ]; kva — where; gatau — have they gone; itaḥ — from here [sthānāt].
Translation
After the demise of our father Pāṇḍu, our two uncles protected all of us—who were but young children and moreover their own relatives—from various calamities. Where have they gone from here?
