राजा लब्धधनो दध्यौ नान्यत्र करदण्डयोः ॥ ३२ ॥92
rājā labdha-dhano dadhyau nānyatra kara-daṇḍayoḥ
Synonyms
jihāsayā — desiring to counteract [jihīrṣayā93]; jñāti-droha — [the sin of] violence perpetrated against his relatives [jñāti-vadha-prayukta-pāpasya]; rājā — the king [Yudhiṣṭhira]; yakṣyamāṇaḥ — was intent on worshiping [Bhagavān (bhagavantam ārādhayituṁ kāmaḥ)]; aśvamedhena — by conducting a horse sacrifice; [since, however]; na labdha-dhanaḥ — he was without a surplus of funds; anyatra — other than [vinā]; kara-daṇḍayoḥ — [those acquired] through taxes and fines; dadhyau — he became anxious [cintayāmāsa]; [about how the sacrifice could be executed (kathaṁ yajñānuṣṭhānaṁ syāt iti); since additional funds would be required for this purpose (dhana-prācuryasyāpekṣaṇīyatvāt)94].
Translation
Desiring to counteract the sin of violence perpetrated against his relatives, King Yudhiṣṭhira was intent on worshiping Bhagavān by conducting a horse sacrifice. Since, however, he was without a surplus of funds other than those acquired through taxes and fines, he became anxious [about how the sacrifice could be executed].
