पूर्वं दृष्टमनुध्यायन्परीक्षेत नरेष्विह ॥ ३० ॥
pūrvaṁ dṛṣṭam anudhyāyan parīkṣeta nareṣv iha
Synonyms
saḥ eṣaḥ prabhuḥ — this highly competent child [samarthaḥ san85]; vikhyātaḥ — was renowned; loke — in the world; parīkṣit iti — as Parīkṣit [“the examiner”]; yat — because [yasmāt]; anudhyāyan — while constantly recollecting; [the person (puruṣam)]; dṛṣṭam — who was seen [by him]; pūrvam — earlier [in the womb (garbhe)]; parīkṣeta86 — he examined; [each and every man (sarvam api naram)]; nareṣu — among those [madhye]; iha — present to his vision [dṛśyamāneṣu]; [and reflected, “Is this Him or not?” (ayam asau bhaved iti noveti vicārayet)].
Translation
This highly competent child was renowned in the world as Parīkṣit, “the examiner,” because, while constantly recollecting the person who was seen by him earlier [in the womb], he examined each and every man among those present to his vision [and reflected, “Is this Him or not?”].
