शौनक उवाच
अश्वत्थाम्नोपसृष्टेन ब्रह्मशीर्ष्णोरुतेजसा ।
उत्तराया हतो गर्भ ईशेनाजीवितः पुनः ॥ १ ॥
śaunaka uvāca
aśvatthāmnopasṛṣṭena brahma-śīrṣṇoru-tejasā
uttarāyā hato garbha īśenājīvitaḥ punaḥ

Synonyms

śaunakaḥ — Śrī Śaunaka; uvāca — said; hataḥ — [although] destroyed; uru-tejasā — by the deadly [of immense or unbearable radiant power (urv adhikaṁ dussahaṁ tejo yasya tena)1]; brahma-śīrṣṇā — weapon of Brahmā [the weapon named brahma-śiras (brahma-śiro-nāmakenāstreṇā), i.e., the brahmāstra]; upasṛṣṭena — released [nikṣiptena2]; aśvatthāmnā — by Aśvatthāmā; garbhaḥ — the child in the womb [Parīkṣit]; uttarāyāḥ — of Uttarā; punaḥ ājīvitaḥ — was brought back to life; īśena — by Śrī Kṛṣṇa [śrī kṛṣṇena]; [this we have heard from you (tvattaḥ śrutam iti śeṣeṇānvayaḥ)].

Translation

Śrī Śaunaka said: Although destroyed by the deadly weapon of Brahmā [the brahmāstra] released by Aśvatthāmā, the child in the womb of Uttarā was brought back to life by Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
