धत्ते भगं सत्यमृतं दयां यशो भवाय रूपाणि दधद्युगे युगे ॥ २५ ॥
jīvanti tatraiṣa hi sattvataḥ kila
dhatte bhagaṁ satyam ṛtaṁ dayāṁ yaśo
bhavāya rūpāṇi dadhad yuge yuge
Synonyms
yadā hi — whenever; nṛpāḥ — kings; tamaḥ-dhiyaḥ — whose intelligence is overpowered by ignorance [tamo-vyāptā dhīḥ yeṣāṁ te79]; jīvanti — conduct themselves; adharmeṇa — unrighteously [only to enhance their own lives (kevalaṁ prāṇān puṣṇanti)]; tatra — then [tadā]; eṣaḥ hi — this very [Śrī Kṛṣṇa]; kila — certainly [implying scriptural authority in support of their statement, such as Bhagavad Gītā 4.7, yadā yadā hi dharmasya80]; dadhat — manifests; rūpāṇi — various forms; sattvataḥ — out of His intrinsic potency of unalloyed being [viśuddha-sattvena]; yuge yuge — in each yuga [at those times (tat-tad-avasare)]; bhavāya — for the preservation of the world [sthityai]; dhatte — [and] thus reveals [prakaṭayati]; bhagam — His majesty [aiśvaryam]; satyam — truthfulness [His avowed commitment to truth (satya-pratijñatvam)]; ṛtam — veracity [His offering instructions precisely in accord with the factual nature of events (yathārthopadeśakatvam)]; dayām — compassion [His grace upon His devotees (bhakta-kṛpām)]; yaśaḥ — [and] fame [His extraordinary exploits (adbhūta-karmatvam)].
Translation
Whenever kings whose intelligence is overpowered by ignorance conduct themselves unrighteously, then this very Śrī Kṛṣṇa certainly manifests various forms out of His intrinsic potency of unalloyed being in each yuga for the preservation of the world, and thus reveals His majesty, truthfulness, veracity, compassion, and fame.
