कुतः सञ्चोदितः कृष्णः कृतवान्संहितां मुनिः ॥ ३ ॥
kutaḥ sañcoditaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kṛtavān saṁhitāṁ muniḥ
Synonyms
kasmin — in which; yuge — age; vā — or; sthāne — location; kena — [and] for what; hetunā — reason [i.e., “what was the motive for composing this Saṁhitā, when Vyāsa had already authored the Mahābhārata and the dharma-śāstras?” (mahābhāratādi-dharma-śāstrāṇi kṛtavataḥ punar etat saṁhitā-karaṇe kiṁ kāraṇam ity arthaḥ)9]; [was]; iyam — this [Bhāgavatī-kathā10]; pravṛttā — brought forth into being [pradurbhutā]; kutaḥ — on what account [kasmāt-hetoḥ kena11]; muniḥ — [was] the contemplative sage [manana-śīlaḥ]; kṛṣṇaḥ — Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana Vyāsa; sañcoditaḥ — impelled [pravartitaḥ]; kṛtavān — to compose; saṁhitām — this Saṁhitā [Bhāgavata-saṁhitā].

In which yuga or location and for what reason was this Bhāgavatī-kathā brought forth into being? On what account was the contemplative sage Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana Vyāsa impelled to compose this Saṁhitā?
