अवतारे षोडशमे पश्यन्ब्रह्मद्रुहो नृपान् ।
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः कुपितो निःक्षत्रामकरोन्महीम् ॥ २० ॥

avatāre ṣoḍaśame paśyan brahma-druho nṛpān
triḥ-sapta-kṛtvaḥ kupito niḥ-kṣatrām akaron mahīm

Synonyms
ṣoḍaśame — in the sixteenth; avatāre — advent [as Paraśurāma98]; [the Puruṣa]; kupitaḥ — became enraged; paśyan — on seeing; nṛpān — [that] the kings [such as Kārtavīryārjuna99]; brahma-druhaḥ — [had become] inimical to the brāhmaṇas [brāhmaṇa-kula-droha-kartṛn]; akarot — [and so] He made; mahīm — the earth; niḥ-kṣatrām — devoid of the warrior clans [from the very root (kṣatriya-bīja-rahitām)]; triḥ-sapta-kṛtvaḥ — twenty-one times.
Translation
In the sixteenth avatāra [as Paraśurāma], the Puruṣa became enraged on seeing that the kings had become inimical to the brāhmaṇas, and so He rid the earth of the warrior clans twenty-one times.
