वासुदेवे भगवति भक्तियोगः प्रयोजितः ।
जनयत्याशु वैराग्यं ज्ञानं च यदहैतुकम् ॥ ७ ॥
vāsudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogaḥ prayojitaḥ
janayaty āśu vairāgyaṁ jñānaṁ ca yad ahaitukam

Synonyms

bhakti-yogaḥ — the yoga of unalloyed devotion; prayojitaḥ — [that is] enacted or directed [or that is specially endowed (prakarṣeṇa yojitaḥ sambaddhaḥ), meaning bhakti performed while endowed with the attitudes of servitude, friendship, and so on (dāsya-sakhyādi-sambandha-yuktaḥ kṛta iti)20]; bhagavati — to Bhagavān [who is replete with six divine opulences (ṣāḍ-guṇya-paripūrṇaḥ)21]; vāsudeve — Vāsudeva, Śrī Kṛṣṇa [the Immanent Self and the ground and support of all beings (sarvāntarātmatvaṁ sarvādhāratvam)22]; āśu — quickly [(śīghram);23 by slight attendance to hearing about Him (īṣat tat-śravaṇa-mātreṇa)24]; janayati — gives rise to; vairāgyam — detachment [from everything other than bhagavad-bhakti (tato’nyatra vairāgyam)]; ca — and; jñānam — the immediate intuition of Reality [(sākṣātkārātmakam);25 meaning the direct apprehension of the essential nature of Bhagavān (bhagavat-svarūpādi-jñānam)]; yat — which [is]; ahaitukam — unmotivated [by the desire for liberation (mokṣa), meaning that sāyujya is unfit to be the cause or the ultimate aim in the matter of bhakti (hetuḥ prayojanaṁ tad atra sāyujyaṁ tan nārhati), in accordance with the understanding that bhakti is without any ulterior cause (annasya hetor vasati iti vat);26 and inaccessible through formal logic, being of the nature of the Upaniṣadic revelation (śuṣka-tarkādy agocaraṁ aupaniṣadaṁ jñānam)]; [the sense being that both jñāna and vairāgya ensue automatically as concomitant effects of bhakti to Bhagavān Vāsudeva (tad-anugāmy eva syād ity āha)].

Translation

Bhakti-yoga that is directed to Bhagavān Vāsudeva, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, quickly gives rise to detachment and the immediate intuition of Reality that is unmotivated [by the desire for liberation.]
