Translation
I take refuge of Śrī Śukadeva, the son of Vyāsa, the teacher of the great sages, who, out of compassion for those entangled in the cycle of birth and death (saṁsāra) and aspiring to cross the dense darkness of material existence, spoke this most confidential of the Purāṇas [Śrīmad Bhāgavata], which is self-endowed with supramundane power, being the essence of all the Vedas, one without compare, and the light of supreme transcendence.
