इतस्ततो वाशनपानवासः स्नानव्यवायोन्मुखजीवलोकम् ॥ २२ ॥
rāṣṭrāṇi vā tair avaropitāni
itas tato vāśana-pāna-vāsaḥ-
snāna-vyavāyonmukha-jīva-lokam
Synonyms
kim [śocasi82] — are you aggrieved; kṣatra-bandhūn — for the degraded knights of religion [the corrupted martial order (kṣatriyādhamān)83]; upasṛṣṭān — who are overcome [or taken possession of (vyāptān)84]; kalinā — by Kali; vā — or; rāṣṭrāṇi — for the kingdoms [or countries (deśān)85]; avaropitāni — invaded [upadrutāni86]; taiḥ — by them; vā — or; [are you mournful (kiṁ śocasi)87]; jīva-lokam — for human beings in general; unmukha — who are prone [or addicted (pravartamānam)]; aśana — to eating [bhojanam88]; pāna — drinking; vāsaḥ — dressing [vastram89]; snāna — bathing; vyavāya — [and] sexual enjoyment [maithunam]; itaḥ tataḥ — in a capricious manner [with complete disregard for all prohibitions (niṣedhānādareṇa sarvatah)].
Translation
Are you aggrieved for the degraded kṣatriyas, who are overcome by Kali, or for the kingdoms invaded by them? Or are you mournful for human beings in general, who are prone to eating, drinking, dressing, bathing, and sexual enjoyment in a capricious manner?
