śūnyo’smi rahito nityaṁ manyase te’nyathā na ruk

Synonyms

[Concluding, however, that all these suppositions could not have been possible in the case of Arjuna, Yudhiṣṭhira now proposes the following as the only feasible explanation, remembering again Nārada’s prophetic words (kiñ ca etā āśaṅkās tvayi na sambhavanti, sambhavati cet idam iti nāradoktiṁ smaran āha kaccid iti).157]; atha — or; rahitaḥ — having been deprived; [of your (tava)158]; nityam — ever [sadā159]; preṣṭha-tamena — dearest; hṛdayena — [and] most intimate [antaraṅgeṇa]; ātma-bandhunā — natural friend [Śrī Kṛṣṇa (svābhāvika-bandhunā kṛṣṇena)160]; kaccit — do [kim]; manyase — you now think; [of yourself (ātmānam)161]; [reflecting thus (iti)]; asmi — I am; śūnyaḥ — empty; anyathā — otherwise; te — your; ruk — mental anguish [manaḥ-pīḍā]; na [ghaṭeta] — could never have occurred; [hence, this alone can be the reason in your case (tava tv ayam eva hetur ity arthaḥ)162].

Translation

Or, having been deprived of your ever dearest and most intimate natural friend [Śrī Kṛṣṇa], do you now think of yourself as empty? Otherwise, your mental anguish could never have occurred.
