पापीयसीं नृणां वार्तां क्रोधलोभानृतात्मनाम् ॥ ३ ॥
pāpīyasīṁ nṛṇāṁ vārtāṁ krodha-lobhānṛtātmanām
Synonyms
[he witnessed (dṛṣṭvā)13]; raudrām — the formidable [(ghorām); or inevitable (aparihāryām)14]; gatim — advance; kālasya — of time; dharmiṇaḥ — whose regular traits [such as the timely production of fruits and flowers, and the punctual arrival of cold and heat (phala-puṣpādayaḥ śītoṣṇādayaś ca)15]; ṛtu — [related to] the seasons [such as spring and so on (vasantādīnām)]; viparyasta — were now reversed; ca — as well as; pāpīyasīm — the sinful; vārtām — means of livelihood [jīvanārthaṁ pravṛttim]; [adopted]; nṛṇām — of [i.e., by] human beings; ātmanām — whose hearts [were prone to (pravaṇa ātmā mano yeṣām); or beset with (yukta ātmā yeṣām)16]; krodha — anger; lobha — greed; anṛta — [and] falsity.
Translation
He witnessed the formidable advance of time, whose regular traits related to the seasons were now reversed, as well as the sinful means of livelihood adopted by human beings, whose hearts were beset with anger, greed, and falsity.
