Synonyms
[The fact that everything Vidura wished to know became immediately realized simply by the revelation of the self’s ultimate attainment is now demonstrated in this verse (tayā’vāpta-vivitsataḥ iti yad-uktaṁ tad-evopapādayati yāvata iti).7]; kṣattā — Vidura; [prathamam8] kṛtavān — [first] posed; yāvataḥ — as many; praśnān — questions [as possible, regarding karma, yoga, vratas, and so on (karma-yoga-vratādi viṣayān)]; agrataḥ — before [purataḥ]; kauṣārava — Maitreya [the son of Kuṣāru]; [thereafter, simply by hearing the response to just a few of them (paścāt teṣu katipaya praśnānām uttarair eva)]; eka-bhaktiḥ — exclusive devotion [bhakti that is an uninterrupted flow and devoid of any other object or goal (avyabhicāriṇī ananya-prayojanā ca bhaktiḥ)]; govinde — to Govinda; jāta — became manifest in his being; ca — and [thus]; upararāma ha — he desisted; tebhyaḥ — from further questioning [(avaśiṣṭa-praśnebhyaḥ);9 meaning that he no longer wished to hear the answers to his remaining questions (tad-uttaraṁ śrotuṁ naicchat), because once bhakti appeared to him, further questioning became pointless (bhaktau jātāyām anyasya jijñāsyasya vaiyarthyāt)10].
Translation
Vidura first posed as many questions as possible to Maitreya regarding karma, yoga, vratas, and so on. [Thereafter, simply by hearing the response to just a few of them,] exclusive bhakti to Govinda became manifest in his being, and thus he desisted from further questioning.
